Paralympic top-class sport is the focus of the Paralympic Day on 15 May 2010. The second Paralympic Day in Leipzig is being held on the occasion of the ISPO 2010 World Congress and the leading global fair ORTHOPÄDIE + REHA-TECHNIK. Conceptual sponsors of the day are the Deutscher Behindertensportverband e.V. (DBS - German disabled sports association), the Deutscher Rollstuhl-Sportverband e.V. (DRS - German wheelchair sports association) and the International Paralympic Committee (IPC). They are staging the event in co-operation with Leipziger Messe GmbH and the German Association of Orthopaedic Technology.
"The Paralympic Day is the leading event in Germany to bring together paralympic sports and opportunities in disabled and rehabilitation sports," declares Markéta Marzoli, Press Spokeswoman of the Deutscher Behindertensportverband e.V. and the National Paralympic Committee.
Young talent meets Olympic winners
Show contests with internationally-recognised athletes are as much a part of the programme as the presentation of disabled sports groups from mass sports. The range of disabled sports encompasses badminton, basketball, ice hockey, fencing, track and field athletics, riding, swimming, Nordic skiing and tennis. Participation events for the general public play an important role.
Paralympic Day Working Group
The concept and organisation of the Paralympic Day is the responsibility of the Paralympic Day Working Group. This includes the President and Commercial Director of the German Association of Orthopaedic Technology, Frank Jüttner and Georg Blome, as well as the Managing Director of Leipziger Messe, Martin Buhl-Wagner, and the ORTHOPÄDIE + REHA-TECHNIK Project Director, Ronald Beyer. Members also include Markéta Marzoli, Press Spokeswoman of the Deutsche Behindertensportverband e.V., Ulf Mehrens, 1st Chairman of the Deutscher Rollstuhl-Sportverband, and Joachim Hamacher, member of the Förderkreis Behindertensport (society for the promotion of disabled sports).
Background information on the organisers
The Deutscher Behindertensportverband brings together some 4,700 disabled sports clubs and groups in 19 state and professional associations in Germany. It is the professional association in the Deutscher Olympischer Sportbund (DOSB) - German Olympic sports federation) with responsibility for sports involving people with disabilities. At the same time, the DBS is also the national paralympic committee for Germany and, in this function, a member of the International Paralympic Committee (IPC). The Deutscher Rollstuhl - Sportverband (DRS) comprises 6,500 wheelchair sportsmen and women, organised into over 250 clubs.
ORTHOPÄDIE + REHA-TECHNIK
Since the year 2000 the Leipziger Messe has played host to the ORTHOPÄDIE + REHA-TECHNIK - International Trade Show for Prosthetics, Orthotics, Orthopaedic Footwear Technology, Compression Therapy and Rehabilitation Technology. Where in 2000 some 10,000 visitors from 30 countries and 318 exhibitors from 24 countries made their way to Leipzig, in 2008 the respective figures were 448 exhibitors from 37 countries and 18,100 visitors from 85 countries. Conceptual sponsor of the overall event is the German Association of Orthopaedic Technology.
In 2010 the fair management anticipates around 450 exhibitors with a focus on orthopaedic technology, orthopaedic shoe technology, rehabilitation technology, surgical supplies and medical technology, medical and technical information as well as workshop and shop fittings.
The Leipziger Messe is economic and legal sponsor of the ORTHOPÄDIE + REHA-TECHNIK trade fair, with the International Society for Prosthetics and Orthotics (ISPO) organising the ISPO World Congress.
